Horizontal stripes make you look wide, always match your shoes and your belt, and never combine navy and black. You can add never wear white after Labor Day to this list of outdated fashion faux pas. As the long weekend signaling the end of summer approaches, don’t retire your white jeans just yet. After all, it’s not whether you wear them after Labor Day that matter, it’s all how you style them. Here are a few ground rules for styling white denim year-round:

Flattering Fit. White denim is unforgivable if you don’t find the right fit. I love this white distressed pair I picked up at the Goodwill Outlet because the cut is more forgiving. If you opt for a skinny ankle jean, pay attention to the thickness of the fabric. Paper thin white jeans are not flattering on anyone. Also, If your lumpy pockets are visible through the denim, cut them out. It looks awkward, and who uses front pockets anyway?

Layers. Light layers like this long draped vest or a leather jacket and scarf topped off with heels or booties make white jeans look chic for fall. Plus, the layers keep you warm in the dropping temps.

Neutrals. Pairing white denim with neutrals is the perfect way to make white jeans work for fall and winter. Browns and grays are easy to match, and various shades can easily be paired together. Try a cream slouchy sweater and booties for a Pinterest-worthy look. Stay away from bold colors and patterns. A subdued palette lets the jeans make a statement without any competition from the top half.
